Plane crash in Ahmedabad
The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support to those involved.
On Tuesday 9 November in 2021, the defendants, Suaiel Haider and Faizaan Haider, attended a wake in Bury.
Over the course of the afternoon, both the defendants are captured on CCTV consuming alcoholic drinks, including shots.
Shortly after 6pm, Faizaan Haider is seen to get into his BMW and leave the venue.
Later that evening, at around 9:30pm, Faizaan and Suaiel Haider are seen getting back into a BMW on Hardman Street, Bury.
Four minutes later, they are involved in a serious collision on Walmersley Road.
The victim, Gavin Andrews, entered a takeaway on Walmersley Road. As he exited with his food, the car, which was being driven by Faizaan Haider, collided with him at high speed.
They left the scene, and minutes later they’re seen setting the car alight on Falshaw Drive.
Emergency services attended, but sadly, despite the best efforts of them and passing members of the public, Gavin Andrews was pronounced deceased.
Following a meticulous investigation by specialist investigators in our Serious Collision Investigation Unit, during which the defendants attempted to distance themselves from the incident, they have today been sentenced to over 13 years in jail.
Faizaan Haider (23/03/00) of Mosley Street, Bury, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death whilst driving uninsured. He has been jailed for nine years and three months. He was also disqualified for three years until a further test passed, extended for four years seven months.
Suaiel Haider (11/08/81) of Langdale Mews, Bury, was found guilty of perverting the court of justice. He has been jailed for four years and three months.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Page of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Today is the conclusion of a three and a half year investigation and I hope this sentence can provide some more closure to the family of Gavin. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gavin’s family for their patience and dignity throughout this investigation.
“These men have shown no remorse at any point since the fatal collision and today they have seen the consequences of their actions. They failed to stop at the scene and made efforts to destroy the car. Their cowardly efforts to destroy evidence and refusal to speak when questioned by officers in custody was unacceptable knowing the harm they had caused. At trial, both men attempted to blame another individual for their actions in a futile attempt to evade justice.
“I hope this case highlights the hard work our officers will go to in order to bring offenders to justice who use the road network in Greater Manchester illegally.”
