A suspected burglar attempted to lie low, but not low enough as he was located hiding under a bed after neighbourhood officers stormed the property following proactive patrols in a burglary hotspot last night (15 January 2025)
Throughout the night, neighbourhood officers along with the neighbourhood district tasking team were out in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas due to a high number of reports of burglaries in the area over the past couple of weeks.
Whilst on patrol, they spotted a man who was acting suspiciously whilst riding a bike just before 5pm. A police officer followed the man to a property on Boscombe Street whilst calling for more officers to attend.
After gaining entry to the address, officers suspected something was wrong when they entered one of the rooms.
After lifting up the bed, they found the man hiding in the storage compartment of a bed attempting to evade police capture.
The man is believed to be a prolific serious acquisitive crime offender who is believed to be responsible for burglaries in the local area.
The man, aged 41, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in custody ahead of being questioned by officers.
Whilst doing a search of the property, another man aged 36 was located in the property and was wanted by police for unrelated matters relating to burglary, theft of a pedal cycle and recall to prison. He was also arrested and remains in custody.
Detective Inspector Natalie McDonald of GMP’s Manchester Central Neighbourhood Crime Team, said: “This is a really great example of proactive policing, we knew there was a local issue occurring over the past couple of weeks in the Rusholme and Moss Side areas and we have placed officers on patrol in specific areas at the times we know burglaries are occurring.
“It shows that when we put officers in the right places at the right time, we see arrests of those who we believe are blighting your local areas.
“If you have any information or concerns about neighbourhood crime in your area, make sure you speak to us. You can do this by calling 101 or reporting issues on gmp.police.uk, in the meantime we have officers on regular patrols in areas that need us the most.
“Our preventative advice makes it easy for you to make it hard for criminals and it is imperative to follow the advice to help keep yourself and your property safe from criminals. For more crime prevention advice visit – Crime prevention advice | Greater Manchester Police (gmp.police.uk).”
