Reckless driver and car thief from Tameside handed two years behind bars – watch the moment he is arrested while washing the dishes

Dominic Baker (12/10/2003), of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 24 months in prison and was disqualified from driving for 24 months, with an extended retest required, at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday 6 March. 

 

Baker pleaded guilty to a range of offences including theft of a motor vehicle, driving dangerously, driving without a licence, possession of a class A drug and a series of bike thefts. 

On Saturday 18 January 2025 at around 4.20 am, Baker stole a Toyota Prius which was parked on Hyde Road Manchester.   

A short while later, at around 5:45 am, Detective Constable Maskrey from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit has located the vehicle travelling along Crookilley Way, Stockport where it was followed along the M60 where it came off at junction 24, Denton Island and headed towards Manchester along Hyde Road.   

The vehicle has then failed to stop and with assistance from the Roads Policing Unit and NPAS, the vehicle was pursued around North Reddish and Gorton where it exceeded 70 mph in a 30 zone, through red traffic lights.   

The vehicle was stung twice before crashing on Mount Road where Baker made off from the vehicle.  Mr Baker was located in a nearby address and was arrested. 

Baker was also as identified as being responsible for the theft of three pedal cycles between September and November 2024. 

At Manchester Crown Court, Dominic Baker was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty of the following offences: 

• Theft of motor vehicle on 18 January 2025  

• Drive a motor vehicle dangerously on 18 January 2025  

• Use a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance on 18 January 2025  

• Drive a motor vehicle otherwise in accordance with a licence on 18 January 2025  

• Possess a controlled drug of Class A – Cocaine on 18 January 2025  

• Theft of pedal cycle on 1 September 2024  

• Theft of pedal cycle on 13 November 2024  
• Theft of pedal cycle on 5 November 2024   

Detective Constable James Maskrey from GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Today’s result shows how we can catch offenders utilising the various resources we have, such as specialist drivers, and our helicopter team.  

“Communities should not have to put up with criminals taking their vehicles and driving dangerously through the streets where they live. 

“Anyone thinking about engaging in criminal activity should think twice, we will catch you and you will be held responsible.”
