Emergency services are responding to an incident following reports that a male entered the River Irwell in Salford this morning (Sunday 26 October).
At around 3:13am, officers were called regarding a concern for welfare on the Irwell Street bridge, and officers are now appealing for information from the public to help locate the individual.
He has been described as a white male, in his 20s, average build with short brown hair, faded at the bottom. He was last seen wearing a grey jacket and black trousers.
Detective Inspector Paul Davies, from Salford's Criminal Investigation Department, said: "We understand how distressing this situation is, and I want to reassure the wider community that officers are working closely with specialist units to find the individual and notify those involved.
"We are dedicating a number of resources to find him, and we are continuing our enquiries to establish the circumstances of this incident.
"Scenes are currently in place around the bridge and river and we urge anyone with information to come forward and report"
