We are delighted to announce the launch of T Level work placements during National Apprenticeship Week 2026, offering a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience across two dynamic gateways in Legal Services and IT as part of their T Level qualification.
T Levels are one of the qualifications that make up the Greater Manchester Baccalaureate (MBacc) – a government-backed approach to technical education that aims to create true parity between technical and academic education, giving young people a clear line of sight to high-quality jobs in our growing economy.
This is part of the mayor’s plan to create a modern work experience system across Greater Manchester, linking technical education to real workplace opportunities.
We hope that some of the T Level students may progress into apprenticeship programmes at GMP.
Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham said: "Our ambition is to give all our young people a clear line of sight to high-quality jobs in the Greater Manchester economy.
“By backing T Level industry placements, Greater Manchester Police is giving them valuable experience, real skills and a genuine foot in the door.
“These placements strengthen the Greater Manchester Baccalaureate (MBacc) and open up career pathways into an organisation that plays a vital role in making our city region a safer place."
T Levels are qualifications for 16 to 19-year-olds and are broadly equivalent to three A levels but focus on technical and vocational skills. Offering a mix of classroom based learning and on-the-job training, T Levels are designed to prepare students for skilled employment, university or further study including degree apprenticeships.
Students are required to complete a work placement of a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) as part of the qualification. The placement provides practical, hands-on experience in a real working environment, allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge and gain industry experience.
Initially GMP will offer three T Level work placements, one in Legal Services and two in IT.
In Legal Services, a student will have the opportunity to support the team by assisting with day to day operational, research and administration tasks to maintain legal service delivery.
In IT, students will be involved in the digital support environment, assisting in system setup, troubleshooting, fault resolution, investigating and recording incidents, diagnosing issues across hardware and software and supporting users in maintaining productivity across the organisation.
Offering T Level work placements allows us to train young people with the skills we need for future positions and attract future talent. Students can bring specific skills and learning to support teams which permits increased creativity and innovative new ideas.
Associate People Director Tina Lonergan said: “We are proud to support the T Level programme and play our part in developing the next generation of talent across our region.
“These industry placements offer students meaningful, hands-on experience within our Legal and Digital functions, helping them build the practical skills, confidence and insight needed to succeed in their future careers.
“As an organisation committed to investing in skills and opportunity, we see T Levels - and the broader MBacc pathway - as a vital bridge between technical education and real-world employment. By opening our doors to young people, we’re not only strengthening future workforce pipelines but also contributing to a system where every learner can see a clear and achievable route into high quality roles.”
