Tackling the issues that matter to our communities in the Northern Quarter

GMP has stepped up activity in Manchester’s Northern Quarter as part of Neighbourhood Policing Week of Action, responding directly to concerns raised by residents and businesses.

Over the past few weeks, officers have been hosting targeted days of action alongside partners from Manchester City Council with the most recent being Monday 15 June 2026, focused on tackling anti-social behaviour, drug-related activity, and crime impacting the local community.

The operation follows continued feedback from people living and working in the area, who have reported increasing issues making people feel nervous in the area. Following a recent Police and Communities Together meeting where residents and businesses alike outlined their concerns, the team headed by Inspector Kam Hare developed bespoke plans to not only tackle criminality in the area but also wider environmental issues including better lighting in dark areas, more CCTV as well as cleaning up areas of concern.

Using community intelligence, officers have already taken decisive action, including securing a closure order on an address on Tib Street linked to ongoing criminality. Activity has also included targeted patrols, stop searches, and enforcement at key hotspot locations, alongside environmental audits to clean up the area and stop criminality in its tracks.

Inspector Kam Hare, from GMP’s City Centre Neighbourhood Team, said: “We’ve listened to the concerns from residents and businesses in the Northern Quarter and are taking targeted action to address them.

“The information shared with us has been crucial in allowing us to act, including securing a closure order and carrying out proactive enforcement to tackle drug-related activity and anti-social behaviour.

“Arrests from across the days of action have included theft, threats with a bladed article, possession with intent to supply, public order and assault of an emergency worker.

“This is part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the Northern Quarter is a safe and welcoming place for everyone. GMP will continue working with partners and the community to sustain action in the area and address the issues that matter most to those who live and work in the Northern Quarter.”

Activity from the three days combined included:

  • 22 arrests
  • 67 stop searches
  • 3 warrants
  • 1 closure order
  • 3 house searches
  • 18 instances of Public Space Protection Order enforcement

Neighbourhood Policing Week of action is currently taking place from 15 to 21 June 2026.

Neighbourhood policing is more than a role – it is a specialism that requires knowledge, skill and strong leadership.

Officers and PCSOs working in neighbourhood teams are often the first point of contact for local people, building trust, preventing crime and dealing with the issues that matter most to the communities they serve, including anti-social behaviour.

We have around 1,400 neighbourhood officers working across 38 teams at GMP – they are based in all 10 of our districts.
