A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving after officers from our Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit (TVIU) recovered a stolen car in Wythenshawe this morning (Tuesday 16 June 2026).
We were alerted by our colleagues in Cheshire that a Mercedes CLC had been taken from the area and was making its way into Greater Manchester.
Our officers picked the vehicle up and pursued it on Hollyhedge Road where the driver of the Mercedes drove at speeds in the excess of 100mph, and through red lights.
Before the incident came to a conclusion, the driver almost hit an innocent pedestrian before turning onto Fancroft Road and crashing the vehicle into a tree on Haveley Road in Benchill.
The driver decamped and was subsequently detained by our officers; he remains in custody for questioning.
Inspector Tony Allt from our Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit said: “This was a high-speed and potentially dangerous incident which almost saw an innocent member of the public injured while out on the street.
“The driver of the Mercedes showed complete disregard for the safety of others, driving at speeds of 100mph across a usually busy junction – thankfully – at that time of the morning, there were no other vehicles on the road.
“Our collaborative work with other forces that we are linked with was clear to see last night, we acted upon Cheshire’s information and arrested the suspect all within a few hours.
“The suspect remains in custody, and it is another person off the streets who thinks they are above the law.”
