Earlier today (Tuesday 2 June 2026) shortly before 9am, officers were called to reports a man with a knife on New Moss Road/ Liverpool Road, Cadishead.
Armed response officers were quickly dispatched to the scene and located a man in his 60s in possession with a large knife. In line with their specialist training, officers deployed and used a taser which enabled officers to safely detain the man.
The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, and he remains in custody for questioning.
Officers are equipped with tasers following extensive training and have recently been given Taser 10 which represents the latest advancement in less-lethal policing technology, providing officers with increased capability to manage high-risk situations while minimising harm to the public, suspects, and police personnel.
Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Jones said: “Public safety remains our absolute priority. Today’s incident demonstrates both the effectiveness of rapid public reporting and the professionalism of our officers in responding to a potentially dangerous situation.
"The deployment of the Taser 10 – the first incident where we have used the new technology - provided officers with a critical less-lethal option to resolve the incident safely and proportionately.
“GMP continues to invest in training and the latest technology to ensure officers are equipped to respond to emerging threats while maintaining the highest standards of accountability and public trust.
“Uniformed officers will remain in the area to provide a visible and reassuring presence for the local community following this incident. If you have any concerns, please speak to them.”
Anyone with further information relating to this incident is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police via 101 quoting log 738 of 02/06/2026, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
