On Sunday 1 March, we were called to an address on Stoneleigh Road, Oldham at around 5:12pm following reports of a serious assault.
As officers attended the scene, they located a man in his 80s with several injuries. The victim was taken to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition.
Officers arrested a man in his 30s at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder. He is currently in custody for questioning.
Superintendent Cara Charlesworth said: "We currently have a man in custody following a serious assault that took place yesterday evening in Oldham.
"We understand this incident may cause distress amongst the community, but we would like to reassure the public that we believe the victim and suspect are known to each other and pose no risk to the wider community.
"Our officers remain dedicated to tackling incidents of this nature and are working around the clock to establish to full circumstances and ensure those involved are held responsible.
"As we conduct a thorough investigation, we will have an increased police presence around the area, and I encourage anyone in the community to please speak with them and raise any concerns or queries you may have."
