Our new Longsight custody suite processed more than 40 detainees in its first operational 24 hours.
The facility at Longsight Police Station in south Manchester officially opened for detainees yesterday (Thursday 14 May 2026), marking the first operational use of the new facility.

Across the day, officers and custody detention officers processed 43 detainees for a range of offences.
A managed capacity was set for the opening day to ensure all processes, systems and staffing levels were operating effectively, and this was successfully met.
The suite will also allow us to deliver an enhanced capacity for the city of Manchester.
The day ran well, with the new processes, technology and layout contributing to a smooth and efficient operation.
Staff utilised the modernised booking-in procedures, our new technology, and scanners strengthening safety measures while maintaining the dignity of those brought into custody.

The successful first day represents a significant milestone in GMP’s ongoing custody improvement programme, providing a safer, more efficient and more humane environment for both staff and detainees, while supporting the delivery of justice for victims.

Inspector Ian Thomas, who oversees Longsight Custody, said: “The first operational day has been a real success, and I’m incredibly proud of how our staff have adapted to the new environment. From the moment we opened our doors, there was a strong sense of professionalism and teamwork which ensured everything ran smoothly.
“The introduction of new processes and technology has made a tangible difference, allowing us to work more efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of care, safety and dignity for those brought into custody.
“We set a controlled capacity for the day to make sure everything operated as it should, and I’m pleased to say we achieved that, giving us a solid foundation to build on in the coming weeks.
“This facility represents a significant step forward for custody provision across Greater Manchester, and it’s fantastic to see it already making a positive impact.”
