The driver of the car remained on the scene, and no arrests have been made in relation to this collision.
His family and colleagues have paid tribute to “wonderful husband” and “cherished friend” who “filled so many lives with happiness”.
Damien’s wife Michelle Mahon said: “Damien was a wonderful husband and an amazing daddy to our two young children. He lit up our life with his cheeky smile and his caring and creative personality.
“He will be dearly missed by all who loved and cared for him. We miss and love him so much, sleep tight until we meet again x”
Damien’s Mum Pauline Mahon said: “How do you put into words something you think would never happen to someone you love. Damien filled so many lives with happiness; he made such a positive impact on people, one which you would never forget.
“As a child Damien didn’t just want to play with toys, he wanted to know how they were put together and as an adult he always had a project ongoing. That’s what led him to his career at the fire station, he was so incredibly proud to tell people what he did and wear his t-shirt with the logo on it. He is going to be so missed by so many.”
Damien was a cherished member of the Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS) family and had been working as a Body Technician and Paint Sprayer at the time of his death.
Kris Smedley - Assistant Director of Fleet and Technical Services, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service has paid tribute on behalf of GMFRS: "Damien was a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a highly respected colleague. Those who knew him will remember his big heart, his infectious smile, and the larger-than-life character that made him so well liked by so many.
“He gave warmth, humour and friendship freely, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched."
