Operation AVRO is our force-wide monthly blitz on local crime which runs in a different district each month.
We will bring you real-time updates including images and video as activity continues throughout the day.
This afternoon, as part of a targeted operation, our dedicated officers executed a series of warrants and targetted operational activity, leading to the discovery of a sophisticated chop shop.
Upon entering the premises, our officers were met with an network of stolen vehicles dismantled for parts.
An investigation is now underway, with officers working to dismantle, identify and recover stolen vehicles.
Tom Penketh reports:
This morning, I joined Greater Manchester Police for Operation Avro, starting at OLC with a briefing from Chief Superintendent Phil Hutchinson.
We then boarded a minibus with officers and followed the Avro team to an address in Chadderton, where we observed them entering a property suspected to be a cannabis farm. Inside, they made an arrest and we witnessed the individual being placed into a police van.
Subsequently, officers allowed us access to the property to observe the setup of a cannabis farm, which consisted of minimal furniture and a small bed on the ground floor.
Due to safety concerns, we were unable to explore the upper level, but the communications team shared images of the extensive cultivation area.
During the operation, our officers provided detailed insights into intelligence gathering, search procedures, the operational dynamics of cannabis farms, and the typical ownership structures.
Overall, it was a valuable experience witnessing GMP's proactive efforts to ensure community safety in Oldham.
