Reflecting on the 50th anniversary of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) coming into existence
This week (wc 1st April 2024) marks the 50th anniversary of GMP coming into existence. Such a milestone provides an obvious opportunity for reflection and to take pride in an organisation which is such an immense force for good.
GMP is fundamentally about people: the many, many thousands of police officers, police staff, contractors and volunteers, past and present, who can take a legitimate pride in their contribution to protecting and serving the communities of Greater Manchester every day for five decades.
They and you have stood together through the best and worst of times, facing adversity with courage and upholding the values that define us.
Longevity on its own is, of course, not a symbol of success. What is of great value is the contribution that GMP has made to the quality of life for the people whom we serve.
GMP, at its best, is there to support people who might wish to get on with their lives; to strengthen communities and cultivate a safe environment for all. In safeguarding vulnerable people and in the relentless battle against criminality, cruelty and selfishness – GMP makes a tangible difference.
Our journey has not been without the inevitable challenges. We haven’t always got things right and on occasions we have got things dreadfully wrong. But throughout, our dedicated, professional and decent officers and staff have shown that they can be consistently relied upon to do their duty in a steadfast manner and to adapt willingly to changed circumstances.
As we progress beyond this important milestone, it is gratifying to note that we begin our next chapter with the force resurgent, ambitious and restless in our determination to improve still further.
I extend my thanks to all of our GMP family – past and present – for their sacrifices, dedication and unwavering commitment to serve and protect the public. These same qualities will carry us forward to continue being the fastest improving force in the country.
Best Wishes
Stephen Watson QPM
