We spoke to Chief Superintendent Mark Dexter, who is the head of Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Specialist Operations Unit. Chief Superintendent Dexter talks about what sets GMP apart from other forces and our direction of travel over the coming months.
What sets GMP apart from other forces?
Manchester is an exciting city to live in and a very exciting place to work for the police - particularly for a Specialist Operations Unit.
We have a breadth of investigations and specialist roles than few other places in the country can match.
From high-speed pursuits to supporting globally significant Counter Terrorism investigations as a firearms officer, a day-in-the-life of a GMP officer is never dull.
What's your view of the offer being made to transferees?
I've never seen any police force make such a generous deal to potential employees.
You can transfer straight into a specialist role if you are already qualified and have a proven track record, or choose to tailor your specialism in any direction you choose.
This is a great opportunity to fast-track your career; gain qualifications and experience while working in any number of areas with Specialist Operations.
How do you view the recent positive changes at GMP?
We're investing a great deal of money in equipment and the right people to make sure we're delivering the standard of policing that Manchester needs and deserves.
On Specialist Operations we've just benefitted from some of the £3.5 million investment in new police cars.
Custody suites are being re-opened to match our increased arrest rate and there are highly-visible forcewide operations like Op AVRO clearly illustrating our renewed focus.
It's the perfect time to join and be part of a resurgent force - a fresh start on force undergoing a fresh start.
What is the attraction of working for GMP Spec Ops?
When you think of our Mounted and Dogs Units, Drones or Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, there's something to suit everyone.
You'll be joining a team that has an excellent record of targeting serious and organised criminals and be at the forefront of keeping Greater Manchester and the wider UK safe.
You'll be working with on exciting investigations, covert operations and complex deployments unmatched by most other parts of the country.
