The district of Stockport is an industrial town in Greater Manchester, south-east of central Manchester, nestled between Tameside, Cheshire and the Peak District. It is home to around 295,000 people and covers about 125 km. The River Mersey starts in Stockport where the rivers Goyt and Tame merge, before continuing its journey through south Manchester and onto Merseyside and the Irish Sea.
