Tameside is at the heart of the county's second largest regional centre and sits between the Pennines and the city of Manchester. The area combines a mix of both urban and rural landscapes, including historic market towns, a canal network and industrial heritage and has an estimated population of around 226,400. Tameside includes the towns of Ashton-under-Lyne, Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden, Dukinfield, Hyde, Longdendale, Mossley and Stalybridge and is well connected to the wider Greater Manchester region and neighbouring counties via the M60 and M67 motorways and rail networks to Manchester and Yorkshire. Its name comes from the River Tame, which flows through Tameside and joins the River Mersey.
