Child sexual exploitation is a form of child sexual abuse. It occurs where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, manipulate or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18 into sexual activity (a) in exchange for something the victim needs or wants, and/or (b) for the financial advantage or increased status of the perpetrator or facilitator. The victim may have been sexually exploited even if the sexual activity appears consensual. Child sexual exploitation does not always involve physical contact; it can also occur through the use of technology.
Reports of non-recent CSE generate a multi-agency response. Greater Manchester Police's partnerships with local authorities, health, and support services have a mutual commitment to caring for victims, keeping people safe and fighting, preventing, and reducing crime.
Victims are the heart of these investigations. They will have anonymity for the rest of their lives. They are supported by GMP, partner agencies, and specialist services and will be for as long as they need. Investigations progress at a speed and in a manner with which they are comfortable.
“I have a personal determination to pursue offenders to the very ends of what we are empowered to do. There can be no hiding space in Greater Manchester for people who have conducted themselves in this way. There is no place for people to hide." - Chief Constable Stephen Watson QPM |
