I have 23 years’ policing experience, starting my career with the Metropolitan Police Service where I served for four years before joining Greater Manchester Police. Throughout my service, I have worked in uniformed roles across both response and neighbourhood policing.
As a Neighbourhood Inspector in Salford, I’m committed to working closely with our communities and partner agencies to tackle local issues, reduce crime and improve public confidence.
I joined Greater Manchester Police in 2002 and have spent the entirety of my service in operational policing. Following an initial period on Response, I worked across a number of specialist departments, including Special Operations and Volume Crime, gaining extensive experience in a variety of policing roles. I joined Salford in 2025 and am currently one of the Neighbourhood Sergeants responsible for the Eccles, Irlam and Cadishead areas. This is the largest and one of the busiest neighbourhood policing areas within Salford, presenting a diverse range of policing challenges and opportunities to engage with local communities and partners.
Officer- Mark Fitzgerrald
Rank /Role- Police Community Support Officer
Neighbourhood Area- Irlam & Cadishead
Length of Service- 24 years
I have served with Greater Manchester Police for nearly 24 years as a PCSO I was one of the very first PCSOs for GMP and the country. My role is being seen mainly on Foot Patrol on my beat, chatting, being seeing by residents. I work closely with partner agencies, businesses, Community Groups, Schools etc to address any concerns in the Community. Our role being a PCSO is mainly around Community Engagement.
Community Engagement as a PCSO I am very passionate about Community Engagement, this something I focus on. I set up quite a few events like, Fun Days, Emergency Service Fun Days, Crime Prevention, Hate Crime, Domestic Abuse, Personal Safety, School Visits, Scout Groups etc. When doing Community events like these this is a good way to speak to residents, you get to know them they get to know their local officers. Also shows the good side what we do around Community Policing. I also set up Junior PCSOs to look at issues around parking around their school,
I think just by being on Foot Patrol in your Community this one of the best ways to Comminate with your residents.

I encourage members of the community to attend local meetings and share their concerns so that together we can help make our neighbourhood a safer place to live, work and visit. I'm currently working on a large scale project which will bring the Irlam and Cadishead community together for a day of free fun.
My priority is to tackle anti-social behaviour through proactive problem solving and partnership working, focusing not only on immediate issues but also on identifying long-term solutions that benefit the wider community. I regularly engage with residents, community groups and partner agencies through local meetings, surgeries and neighbourhood events.
By developing a comprehensive intelligence picture around emerging concerns and thinking beyond traditional enforcement methods, I aim to address the root causes of problems wherever possible. I encourage members of the community to attend local forums and share information and concerns, helping us work together to keep our neighbourhoods safe, welcoming and thriving
I have been a police officer for 6.5 years, with most of my career spent on frontline response policing. During this time, I have gained experience managing incidents, safeguarding vulnerable people, investigating crime and supporting victims.
