I have 23 years’ policing experience, starting my career with the Metropolitan Police Service where I served for four years before joining Greater Manchester Police. Throughout my service, I have worked in uniformed roles across both response and neighbourhood policing.
As a Neighbourhood Inspector in Salford, I’m committed to working closely with our communities and partner agencies to tackle local issues, reduce crime and improve public confidence.

Welcome to your Salford West Neighbourhood pages.
I am Inspector Steve Corless and I cover Little Hulton, Walkden, Worsley, Ellenbrook, Boothstown, Winton, Eccles, Barton, Monton, Peel Green, Irlam and cadishead areas of Salford.
I joined Greater Manchester Police in December 2022, but I started in Merseyside Police in 2001. I have worked in a variety of uniform roles as a constable, these being Neighbourhood, Response, Armed response, Matrix Disruption before I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and posted to Custody. During my time there I achieved the rank of Inspector then decided on a move closer to home. I was brought up in the Little Hulton and Walkden area, so I fully understand the diverse layout within the community. I covered response for the first 6 months in GMP in the Salford district before being posted to Neighbourhood Inspector.
I have always enjoyed front line policing, problem solving and partnership work. Neighbourhood policing is something I truly believe can have a positive impact on communities and working with partners and yourselves we can target and deal with those individuals who negatively impact your quality of lives.
I understand the issues in our areas are burglary, anti-social behaviour drug dealing and knife crime and my officers and staff are working day and night to ensure that we prevent these types of offences On these pages you will find priorities in our area that we continue to work on. We will update these priorities with the action we have taken to remedy them.

GMP have launched an alert system called Bee in the loop which will enable us to contact you directly about these priorities. It will also enable you to speak to officers on the ground, where you live, so you can tell us what matters most to you.
You can sign up at www.beeintheloop.co.uk
If this isn’t for you, you can also see our scheduled meetings. You will get to speak to an officer directly.

    Issued 08 June 2026

    Action taken:

Your local neighbourhood officers will be targeting shoplifting offences and other retail crime, through high visibility policing. We will prioritise offences against retail workers and take action against offenders. We will be working closely with the retailers and management teams to provide crime prevention advice and obtain Criminal Behaviour Orders for prolific offenders - giving local retailers and police more robust powers to tackle shoplifting
