Retail crime
Issued 09 June 2026
We investigate all reports of retail crime where viable lines of enquiry exist. Our Neighbourhood Team proactively targets repeat offenders and affected locations, ensuring a focused and consistent response. Where appropriate, we also request Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBOs) against persistent offenders through the courts and share updates on these outcomes through our social media channels and Bee In The Loop.
We currently have seven repeat perpetrators responsible for multiple incidents of retail crime across Atherton, Tyldesley, and Astley Mosley Common. Through successful prosecutions, we have secured CBOs for all seven individuals, including two obtained since the start of this year
GMP’s Winter of Action, which saw intensified focused on neighbourhood policing across the force, and lead to 750 arrests and a reduction in retail crime by 11%, was spotlighted on Granada Reports yesterday on 29 January 2026, alongside an interview with Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle.
The spotlight featured ‘bobbies on the beat’ PCSO Gill Wray, and PC John Pilling as they interacted with the community around Tyldesley, with PSCO Wray emphasising how having visibility in communities builds up trust to a point where members of the public ‘will ring you and tell you stuff’.

In August 2026 we secured a theft‑shoplifting charge against a male linked to an organised group targeting retail stores nationally and stealing high‑value alcohol. The investigation required coordinated liaison with multiple police forces to align intelligence, plan arrests and ensure the offender was brought to justice. This reflects the team’s commitment to thoroughly investigating retail crime and pursuing all offenders who impact local businesses and communities.

Neighbourhood crime including burglary, robbery and vehicle crime
Issued 09 June 2026
We investigate all reports where viable lines of enquiry exist, carrying out house to house checks, reviewing CCTV, and requesting Crime Scene Investigators where forensic opportunities are identified.
When we see a series or spike in offences, we work closely with the Wigan Neighbourhood Tasking Team to coordinate proactive deployments—both covert and overt—at key times. Specialist resources such as Traffic, Dog Units, and Air Support are requested where appropriate to support these operations.
We will continue to share successful outcomes and prosecutions through our social media channels and Bee In The Loop to keep our communities informed.
Following an investigation by the Neighbourhood Team a male adult from Tyldesley has been charged and remanded for theft from motor vehicle that occurred in December. This male is one of target nominals and was already on bail for theft-shoplifting and breach of a criminal behaviour order. He appeared at court in February and is now serving a custodial sentence.
During April, following enquiries by the Tyldesley Neighbourhood Team and an investigation by the Neighbourhood Crime Team, an adult male was identified as being responsible for a series of burglaries in the Tyldesley area, predominantly in and around the Elliott Street corridor. The suspect has since been arrested and charged in relation to several of these offences and has been bailed pending further investigation into additional serious acquisitive crime linked to the area.
